Dairy industry plays a very important role in India's agro-based economy. Since the advent of Anand Milk Union Ltd (AMUL) in 1946, the dairy industry has maintained its position as one among the major exporting industries of India. It has also increased the demand of talented and trained professionals in both public and private sector, to serve in the field of dairy technology. By considering the importance of dairy technology, many educational institutes have included courses in the field to train young aspirants.
Course Details
A number of institutes in India impart the study of dairy technology through courses at various degree levels. These courses are being offered generally at the undergraduate (Bachelor of Science - Dairy Technology), postgraduate (Master of Science - Dairy Technology / Dairy Science) and postgraduate diploma level program in dairy technology. Various engineering colleges have included dairy technology in their curriculum and are offering B Tech course in dairy technology. To pursue the UG courses, one must have passed 10+2 examination with science stream, from any recognized state/national Board. For the PG degree and diploma courses, one has to complete his/her graduation in relevant stream, from any recognized University. Students are admitted through entrance test, which is conducted at national level.
Career Prospects
Due to the formation of the National Dairy Development Board in India, the importance of dairy technologists has increased. Many government and private organizations are looking for professionals in the field who can perform designing, development and execution of their crucial projects. After completing the relevant course, one can join any dairy equipment manufacturing plant or entrepreneurial ventures in milk plants or ice cream units as a supervisor / dairy consultant / project execution.
